Chairman’s Message: Our New Decade Together

Buckley

The last Chairman’s Message is always a nostalgic missive to write. It means that my year at the helm of NUCA is coming to an end. As I look back at the last twelve months, I am proud to see the changes that have helped guide our association in the right direction – into a stronger, more collaborative, member-driven organization. Soon at NUCA we’ll be welcoming a new chairman of the board. I want to thank the NUCA Board, our NUCA Chapter leadership. A sincere, special thanks to the executive directors, and national staff for their hard work and dedication over the last year. I also wanted to thank them for the confidence shown to me in my decisions and my thoughts about the next steps for NUCA.

An association is a team effort. We know that together we can achieve greater results for the industry than we could working alone. In 2019, we began to implement a strategic plan that focuses on membership growth and an overall greater value of NUCA for each member and the industry. We’ve made decisions which will strengthen advocacy efforts that are already yielding results. We have created new opportunities to interact and collaborate with our executive directors, our chapters, and national partners to accomplish our shared objectives. Our membership program has become more focused on the retention of existing membership, establishing new Chapters, and seeking out passionate members to join our efforts and to keep them engaged for years to come. We are also striving to provide an exceptional benefits program to enhance all of our businesses which, when used correctly, pays for your membership dues.

We are looking to the future and to those who wish to create their own futures in our industry as employees or leaders. America’s communities need the utility services and infrastructure we create and build. To keep these vital projects rolling, a strong pipeline of new workers and future leaders is paramount. To that end, workforce development is a priority for NUCA over the next 10 years, and we are working with our partners, Chapters, and outside organizations to ensure that a healthy future for the industry becomes reality.

As I prepare to hand the Chairman’s gavel to Fred Chesney, I want my fellow NUCA members to know that we, the board, committee chairpersons, chapter officers, national partners, executive directors, and national staff, are giving him an organization that has grown tremendously in the last 12 months. I want to thank everyone for the hard work and time they put in each day to make NUCA a stronger organization. Like all organizations in transition, we faced some turbulence over the past year, but with the right leadership and the right staff now in place, NUCA is positioned to achieve a memorable year of growth in 2020. I’m glad you want to be a part of it.
