Akkerman Inc. Announces Passing of Trenchless Pioneer Maynard Akkerman

Maynard Akkerman

It is with profound sadness that the family of Maynard Akkerman, and the team at Akkerman Inc. announce his passing. Maynard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and visionary, whose leadership helped shape an entire industry. Maynard passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 19, 2025, at the age of 69.

Maynard lived with integrity, led with humility, and built his life on faith and values. He began working part-time at his family’s construction business (D.H. Akkerman Construction Co.) at age 15 and, in 1987, purchased Akkerman Inc. with his wife Robin, his lifelong partner and soulmate. Together, they grew Akkerman Inc. into a global trenchless leader with a strong leadership team and a deep bench of expert employees.

Under Maynard’s leadership, Akkerman Inc. became known not just for its cutting-edge trenchless equipment, but for its people-first culture. He mentored countless employees, many of whom spent decades at the company. His door was always open, and he led by example, exemplifying high standards and genuine care.

Akkerman was inducted into the NASTT Hall of Fame in 2019, earned the Microtunneling Achievement Award in 2022, and was the Trenchless Technology Person of the Year in 2008. He was also a member of The Moles.
