HD Supply Waterworks provides contractors with safety worksite education
In the rally around safety during this year’s Construction Safety Week, HD Supply Waterworks’ Tom Janicik, director of environmental, health and safety, and John Buck, senior manager of operations, joined contractor Archer Western at one of its jobsites the Snapfinger Treatment Plant in Atlanta, to share their expertise on construction site safety best practices.
“The safety of our customers, as well as that of our own associates, is an important part of the HD Supply Waterworks mission. Safety matters for everyone involved, no matter where product is at, whether it’s our yard or at a jobsite,” Janicik said. “We’re committed as a value-added distributor to share both industry best practices and our expertise on safety practices with our valued customers when it comes to handling the type of products we supply.”
Over 150 construction workers were on site for the presentation that focused on safety practices specific to handling waterworks products. Janicik and Buck discussed construction safety awareness and safety considerations when loading/unloading pipe while working on site.
Some of the topics covered included:
- Energy source awareness – typical energy sources on a construction site and line of fire/body position and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) considerations.
- OSHA’s Focus 4 Areas for construction safety (falls, caught-in or between, struck-by, electrocution).
- Ductile pipe unloading/loading safety considerations.
- “Zone of Safety”Âť – HD Supply’s own “Zone of Safety”Âť practice (a virtual “safe”Âť zone that creates a restricted space around all sides of an operating piece of lift equipment and its load) to help protect the lift equipment operator and others working in the area.
“We appreciate being a part of Construction Safety Week activities with Archer Western at the Snapfinger site,” Janicik said. “Having the opportunity to offer what we know and practice when it comes to safety in handling our products is knowledge that we are happy to share with all of the construction companies we work with.”
