In Memoriam: Don E. Bower

Donald E. Bower, 71, of Berwick, died Sunday, November 24, 2019, at his home. Born Aug. 16, 1948 in Berwick, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Clyde D. and Edna Mae (Samsel) Bower.

A graduate of Berwick Area High School, Class of 1966, Bower went on to become the President of NUCA member Don E. Bower Inc., Cedar Rock Materials Corp., Briar Meadows Development Corp., and DMB Land Company. His son, Matt Bower, is a board member of NUCA of Pennsylvania.

Don was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Bloomsburg, Knapp Lodge 462 F & AM, Caldwell Consistory Valley of Bloomsburg, Irem Shrine of Dallas, Stuart Tank Association board, First Keystone Community Bank board from 2001 to the present, Berwick Hospital board, and the Boy Scouts of America board.

Don was a proud Vietnam Veteran, serving from 1966-1969 as a Sergeant in the 196th Light Infantry Brigade. He served 13 months in Germany, one year and nine months as Company Commander in the field and three months as Supply Sergeant in the field.

Don was a devoted husband, father, and Pop-Pop who beyond spending time with his family enjoyed collecting cars, restoration of the barn at Cedar Rock, and spending time fishing with friends and family in the Florida Keys. Don felt pride in his businesses, especially working with his son and nephews Stephen G. Bower and Daniel M. Bower, and his many devoted employees. He always said, “you are only as good as your employees.”

Preceding him in death were his brother, Clyde D. Bower Jr.; and his sister-in-law, Linda Bower.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, the former Joanne Berkes; one son, D. Matthew Bower and his wife, Michelle (Kleintob) of Berwick; three daughters: Michelle Bower-Kozak, wife of Thomas Kozak of Nescopeck, Jennifer Berlin, wife of Scott Berlin of Berwick, and Sarah Bower-Grieco and her husband Francesco of Philadelphia; six grandchildren: Ellie, Sydney, Owen, Addison, Aiden, and Cole; two brothers: John R. Bower and his wife, Eleanor of Berwick, Tom L. Bower of Berwick, and a sister-in-law Rose Bower. As well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Interment was at Pine Grove Cemetery in Berwick.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Stuart Tank Committee, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, or the Berwick Salvation Army.
