NUCA Joins Annual Value of Water Campaign
The National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) joined the sixth annual “Imagine A Day Without Water” day on October 21 to raise the public’s awareness of not taking clean water for granted and to highlight the growing need for increased investment in our nation’s water infrastructure systems.
“We’re thrilled that NUCA is part of today’s ‘Imagine A Day Without Water’ program,” said NUCA CEO Doug Carlson. “The infrastructure and services our members build and repair to deliver clean water to our community’s homes and business are not free and should not be taken for granted. We all must educate ourselves about where our water comes from and the investment these critical health and economic systems require.”
America’s utility construction industry has a personal investment in this topic. Our members build this infrastructure and repair it every day, so they know what is needed to keep this complex system functioning. NUCA member Garney Construction of Chantilly, Virginia, is one of those organizations recognizing the importance of clean water and building and maintaining our national water infrastructure. The company’s 2020 video supporting “Imagine A Day Without Water” can be viewed here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GvW4uvjpds.
“Imagine A Day Without Water” is an opportunity for American organizations of all sizes and ideas, from utility construction contractors to city halls and local businesses to talk about and ponder why clean water is important to them. Over the past five years, this growing event has provided a platform for educating the public and advocating for leaders to prioritize investing in water today.
Investment in our drinking water and wastewater systems is a thoughtful pathway to economic recovery. Renewing our aging infrastructure this year will create jobs, protect public health, and reduce increased costs in future improvements or emergency repairs. And there is a role for each of us to play, including that of our elected lawmakers.
NUCA has been in the forefront of supporting this year water investment legislation moving through Congress. The association, made up of over 1,700 contractors and service businesses, strongly supported the Water Quality Protection and Job Creation Act (H.R. 1497) sponsored by Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR). The bill was sent to the full House by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in September 2020, but has not been scheduled for a vote by House leadership.
NUCA is confident that today’s focus on water infrastructure will demonstrate to Congress why H.R. 1497 and other infrastructure legislation is critical to fulfilling the promise of reliable and clean water supplies for all Americans.
