8th UESI Utility Investigation School Held

Practical session –The 8th Utility Investigation School – Ruston, LA.

On May 24-28, 2021, the Trenchless Technology Center at Louisiana Tech University and Construction Engineering and Management (CEM), College of Engineering at Purdue University, teamed up with ASCE’S Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI) to hold the 8th UESI Utility Investigation School (UIS) at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana.

The school is a 40-hour course for professionals stamping ASCE 38-compliant utility mapping deliverables and their direct reports such as lead CAD and Field staff.  The class addresses the two performance goals of ASCE 38:  How can a project be designed so as to have minimal utility issues during project development, and how can the professionals protect themselves against utility-related claims.

The individuals who attended the 8th UIS were from A/I/DATA, Audubon Companies, BGE Inc., CDS MUERY, CobbFendley & Associates, Colliers Engineering & Design, LA 811, Lamb-Star Engineering LLC, Midwest Mole, ProStar, RAVAN AIR, SeeScan, T2 Utility Engineers, and the Whiddon Group. ProStar and Lamb-Star Engineering were the industry partners and sponsors.

On May 27, 2021, in conjunction with the 8th Utility Investigation School, Dr. Les Guice presented the TTC Lifetime Achievement Awards to Mike Garver, founder of BRH-Garver Construction. At the banquet. Dr. Les Guice, who was the department head of Civil Engineering in 1988 when he hired Dr. Tom Iseley and assisted with the establishment of TTC, is now the president of Louisiana Tech University. He had the opportunity to work with Garver in several research projects. In 1986, Garver was the first in the United States to use microtunneling for non-person entry diameter size pipe installation as part of the River Oaks Project in Houston, Texas. In 1995, Garver was selected as the Trenchless Technology Person of the Year.

After successfully conducting the 8th UIS, the Buried Asset Management Institute – International (BAMI-I) and the Lawrence Technological University (LTU) have teamed up with the ASCE UESI to hold the 9th ASCE UESI / BAMI-I UIS School on Aug. 9-13, 2021, in Southfield, Michigan.
