Hydro Excavation Tips for Plumbing
Reliable excavation methods are essential in the plumbing industry, particularly when working around existing utilities. Hydro excavation greatly improves the efficiency and accuracy of plumbing repairs while minimizing the risk of damage to underground utilities.
Traditional excavation often requires digging with limited visibility, increasing the chances of striking gas lines, water pipes or electrical cables. 1. Use precision, not guesswork. Crews should always call 811 and review available utility maps before excavation begins. Utility markings may be incomplete or outdated, so it is important to ensure their accuracy ahead of time to reduce the risk of damaging underground infrastructure.
2. Plan for site conditions. Soil type, moisture and temperature all affect hydro excavation performance. During spring and wet seasons, soft or muddy conditions can slow debris removal. In winter, crews may need heated water systems to cut through the frozen ground. Evaluating site conditions in advance helps crews optimize equipment performance and minimize downtime.
3. Match equipment to project scope. The size and scale of typical plumbing projects should guide equipment selection.
