Top Jobs Awards: Vogel Bros. (Overall Winner)
Water or Sewage Treatment Plant
Vogel Brothers Building Co., Lakeland, Fla.
Project: Sanford WTP #2
Vogel Brothers’ project was an upgrade to an existing water treatment plant. The upgrade consisted of the construction of a new treatment train utilizing granular activated carbon (GAC) and ozone. This particular treatment pairing was being used for the first time in an effort to reduce the level of trihalomethane (THM) in the city’s water distribution system. In addition, the project included tying into a new underground aquifer and installing new high-speed booster pumps for distribution to the city’s water supply system. The entire treatment train was constructed in the middle of an operating water treatment plant that had to remain on line throughout construction. The fact that the plant was in service required careful coordination and well thought-out lifting plans to safely install the large carbon vessels and oxygen storage tanks on a limited footprint. Vogel Brothers also needed to tie in a new supply line by connecting to a directional drill from a new aquifer well and replace the high-service pumps serving the entire city. The entire GAC/ozone treatment process was an innovative way to not only reduce the THM in the plant output, but to reduce the THM level throughout the city’s distribution system without having to clean or line the existing distribution lines. Completion of the project resulted in significant improvement to the water quality for the entire City of Sanford and a reduction of THM levels to below the threshold level.
