UCA of Connecticut to Award Three Scholarships

The Utility Contractors Association of Connecticut (UCAC) will award three college scholarships on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Metro Bis Restaurant in Simsbury. The scholarships will be presented to the winners at the UCAC Scholarship Dinner, which will also feature a tribute to UCAC Past Presidents and long-time members, William “Bill” Dufford and David D. Ambrose.

These general scholarships will be awarded to Brooke LaDuke of Cromwell, Alexia Adams of Union, and James Vincente of Avon, based on their academic standing, SAT scores, athletic achievements and extracurricular activities. All three recently graduated from high school and have plans to attend college in the fall.

James Vincente, a recent graduate of Avon High School, was awarded the UCAC General Scholarship based on a unanimous vote of the Scholarship Committee. A member of the National Honor Society, James has worked diligently throughout his educational career to achieve the highest grades possible for his future. He has been balancing multiple extracurriculars, namely soccer and theatre, with a heavy course load. James plans to attend Long Island University where he will study Theatre. It is his dream to become an actor and a playwright. James’s father, Leonel Vincente, is an employee at VMS Construction and a long-time member of UCAC.

Alexia Adams, whose father Brett is a valued member of VMS Construction, is a graduate of Woodstock Academy. Among many extracurriculars, Alexia is a member of the Science National Honor Society. While working at VMS Construction Company part-time, tracking job quantities/hours and assisting in the implementation of a new maintenance software, Alexia has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her high school career. She will be attending Cornell University’s College of Engineering and plans to get a degree in Computer Science. After college, Alexia plans to work for a software company that will help produce better technology and software applications for the construction industry.

Brooke LaDuke recently graduated from Cromwell High School and is on her way to the University of Connecticut in Storrs. Brooke is interested in studying Business or Healthcare. Throughout her high school career, she has been involved in many volunteer experiences and extracurriculars while skillfully maintaining a full course load. Her father, Matthew LaDuke is an employee of WI Clark and a longtime member of UCAC.

Outgoing UCAC President and Chair of the Scholarship Committee Kevin Plourde, P.E., summed up the feelings of the UCAC Board and the Scholarship Committee. “The UCAC Scholarship program, a long-standing tradition for our organization, serves as a way for us to give back to our community, our members and outstanding high school students. We look forward to the Scholarship Program every year.” Plourde knows the value of these scholarships; he was a recipient back in the 90s!
